Australia releases draft legislation to update media-bargaining code

( April 28, 2026, 03:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australia has released draft legislation to update its news-media bargaining regime by requiring major digital platforms to either strike deals with publishers or pay a levy based on their Australian revenue. In a joint statement on Tuesday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Communications Minister Anika Wells and Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino said the proposed legislation addresses a limitation in the long-standing News Media Bargaining Code that allows digital platforms to avoid their obligations by removing news from their services. The draft legislation proposes to impose a 2.25 percent charge on a platform’s Australian-attributable revenue if it does not enter into commercial agreements with news publishers. Tuesday's move follows the government's 2025 announcement on the News Bargaining Incentive consultation.Statement follows.
