South Korea to tighten surveillance of high-priced essentials amid unfair-trade concerns

( February 11, 2026, 03:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea will begin cross-government inspections from Wednesday to crack down on unfair-trade practices that undermine efforts to stabilize consumer prices. The initiative will be run through a new “unfair-trade inspection team” under a ministerial task force on livelihood-price management, led by the Korea Fair Trade Commission’s vice chair and supported by monitoring and on-site inspection units. Authorities will select and continuously update high-risk product categories using factors such as price-hike rates, market concentration and how closely items affect daily life, and will jointly investigate cases where abnormally high prices appear linked to collusion, abuse of dominance or other misconduct. Agencies including the competition regulator, tax service, customs authorities, prosecutors and police will coordinate sanctions and follow-up monitoring, while the government said it will use all available tools, including price-correction orders, to normalize prices.Statements are attached (in Korean)....
