South Korea's Yanolja, Yeogi Eottae face criminal referrals over ad coupons

( January 14, 2026, 06:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Yanolja and Yeogi Eottae are facing a criminal referral push after South Korea’s Ministry of SMEs and Startups decided to request that the Korea Fair Trade Commission file complaints with prosecutors over alleged abuse of superior bargaining power against partner lodging businesses. The ministry said the two online travel agencies sold advertising products that bundled discount coupons, then let the value of unused coupons expire without refunding the merchants — conduct it said caused harm to SMEs and small businesses. It said Yanolja’s conduct ran from February 2017 to May 2024 and involved roughly 1.2 billion won ($812,000) worth of unused coupons, while Yeogi Eottae’s ran from June 2017 to August 2025 and involved about 35.9 billion won worth of unused coupons. The competition watchdog has already issued corrective orders and fines in both cases.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
