New Philippine law removes franchise hurdle for data-transmission providers

( August 25, 2025, 07:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Philippines’ “Konektadong Pinoy” Bill, also known as the Open Access in Data Transmission Act, lapsed into law yesterday after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. neither signed nor vetoed the measure. The new law allow new players to invest in broadband and data transmission facilities without the need for a congressional franchise, with the aim of expanding Internet access and boosting competition among service providers nationwide. The new law is also expected to accelerate the rollout of Internet services in remote communities and schools where connectivity remains limited. The Department of Information and Communications Technology is expected to release the implementing rules and regulations of the law within 90 days.The full statement follows:...
