US FTC should investigate Meta's $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, groups say

( August 7, 2025, 19:28 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Meta Platforms' investment in Scale AI by acquiring a 49 percent stake for $14.3 billion is deeply concerning as it is an effort by the tech giant to further entrench its market power in generative AI model development, personal social media networking, and digital advertising, a group of 12 advocacy groups said in a letter to US Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson. The groups asked the FTC to investigate the "de facto vertical acquisition of Scale AI," saying the transaction follows Meta’s familiar anticompetitive "buy or bury strategy," for which it is already facing an FTC lawsuit. "The structure of the transaction – a non-controlling stake that falls just below the 50% threshold for mandatory reporting is a deliberate attempt to evade FTC scrutiny," they said.Statement follows below.
