New Zealand’s Foodstuffs, Gilmours to face court proceedings over cartel conduct

( July 15, 2025, 00:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: New Zealand grocery retailer Foodstuffs North Island and wholesaler Gilmours Wholesale will face court proceeding for engaging in cartel conduct because they allegedly obstructed a supplier’s ability to sell groceries to a customer, New Zealand's antitrust regulator said. In a statement today, the New Zealand Commerce Commission said that it is filing civil proceedings under 2023 Grocery Industry Competition Act alleging that Foodstuffs and Gilmours obstructed a supplier’s ability to sell groceries directly to a customer. The regulator added that it investigated arrangements involving Foodstuffs and Gilmours with a national grocery supplier, focusing on product supply to a hospitality customer. The regulator said it found that after Foodstuffs and Gilmours learned that the supplier and customer had started trading directly, the two companies convinced the supplier to channel the business through them instead. The full statement by the New Zealand Commerce Commission follows:...
