Antitrust laws protect 'competing viewpoints' in news media, US DOJ says

( July 11, 2025, 14:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater of the US Department Justice’s Antitrust Division said that when companies abuse their market power to block and deplatform independent voices and protect legacy media, they harm competition and threaten the free flow of information on which consumers depend. The DOJ filed a statement of interest in a US case accusing the Washington Post, British Broadcasting, Associated Press, and Reuters of engaging in an illegal boycott through their “Trusted News Initiative” against news publishers with “rival viewpoints.” “Defendants’ proposed rule of law exempting viewpoint collusion from the antitrust laws would free major news organizations and dominant digital platforms to block competitive threats that offer alternative, competing viewpoints. The US therefore files this statement to urge the court to reject Defendants’ suggestion that the antitrust laws play no part in protecting viewpoint competition in news markets,” the agency said.Statement follows in full.
