IP Europe opposes EU-backed carmaker patent pool, citing antitrust risks

( July 9, 2025, 14:08 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: IP Europe, a trade association representing companies that own technology standards such as Nokia and Ericsson, has criticized the European Commission’s guidance published today for an Automotive Licensing Negotiation Group for standard essential patents. The association warned that the ALNG could "threaten innovation and harm consumers." Automakers such as BMW and Volkswagen could drive down licensing fees unfairly below fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory levels, the statement says, potentially using collective market power in an anticompetitive way.
