TikTok now regulated under Japan's digital-platforms law

( June 30, 2025, 00:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced that TikTok is now regulated under the digital-platform law as a major digital-advertising platform operator. Due to its annual revenue in Japan exceeding the threshold in the fiscal year ending in March, the company will be subject to the Act on Improving Transparency and Fairness of Digital Platforms, which regulates large platforms’ dealings with business users. Under this law, TikTok — which displays ads to social media TikTok and TikTok Lite through its ad distributor, TikTok for Business — must adhere to such rules as setting up a section that handles business users’ complaints and queries. Starting from fiscal 2026, the company is required to submit its annual compliance report, aligning it with the same guidelines that govern other major technology platforms operating in Japan, the ministry said.
