Japan publishes first enforcement report on freelance worker protection law

( May 15, 2025, 09:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japan Fair Trade Commission today released its first annual report on the implementation of a freelance worker protection law that took effect in November. The law requires outsourcing companies to provide written contracts and to pay independent contractors within 60 days, while other labor-related provisions are enforced by the labor ministry. The JFTC conducted a publicity campaign to raise awareness of the new law and issued guidance in 54 cases during the year ending in March. In specific industries such as game software, fitness clubs and transportation, the regulator directed companies to clearly specify working conditions and contractual terms in advance and to ensure that payments were made within the required timeframe.
