US senators reintroduce bill aimed at making social media platforms interoperable

( May 7, 2025, 19:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US Senator Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, reintroduced the Augmenting Compatibility and Competition by Enabling Service Switching, or ACCESS Act, which would encourage market-based competition between major social media platforms. The ACCESS Act would require the largest companies to make user data portable — and their services interoperable — with other platforms. It would also allow users to designate a trusted third-party service to manage their privacy and account settings. The bill would increase consumer choice by requiring large communications platforms with products or services with over 100 million monthly active users in the US make their services interoperable with competing communications platforms. It would also permit users to easily port their personal data in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format. US Senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal joined Warner in reintroducing the bill.Statement follows. See attached document...
