China targets AI, tech self-reliance to strengthen advanced manufacturing

( September 17, 2026, 05:45 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China will seek to expand advanced manufacturing, strengthen control over key industrial supply chains and accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in manufacturing, President Xi Jinping said in instructions reported by state news agency Xinhua on Thursday. Premier Li Qiang told a national advanced-manufacturing conference in Beijing that China should focus on next-generation smart manufacturing, pursue greater technological self-reliance and support companies’ digital transformation. The government will also strengthen research into key technologies, expand emerging industries, develop future industries and upgrade traditional sectors, Li said. Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing said China should tackle “disorderly and irrational competition” and improve support for companies while upgrading key industrial chains.Statement follows (in Chinese)....
