European Parliament environment committee backs expanded carbon market reserve

( September 10, 2026, 08:49 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The European Parliament's environment committee has voted in favor of keeping the mechanism that removes surplus carbon allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System’s market stability reserve, which manages excess allowances to help balance the carbon market. Lawmakers want to raise the limit to 650 million allowances from 400 million in March 2027. The European Commission has proposed stopping the invalidation mechanism immediately to allow unlimited numbers of additional allowances to be kept as a buffer in the reserve.
