South Korea's state childcare, adoption agency fined $641,000 for data breaches

The Personal Information Protection Commission said Thursday that it imposed 863 million won in penalties and 22.2 million won in administrative fines on the National Center for the Rights of the Child. The PIPC found that the most serious breach stemmed from the digitization of children’s records between 2013 and 2022, involving more than 1.17 million records, including 1.14 million relating to adoptees and about 30,000 involving missing children. The PIPC said the adoption agency only became aware that the devices containing the data were missing during checks in 2024 and 2026.The statement is attached (in Korean). ...
