Indonesia advances cybersecurity bill, data protection implementing rules

( August 21, 2026, 06:07 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Indonesia is drafting the Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience Law alongside implementing rules for its Personal Data Protection Law, as the government strengthens its response to AI-enabled cyber threats. Deputy Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Nezar Patria said in a statement Thursday the government is seeking industry and academic input to ensure the frameworks remain practical, adaptive and risk-based. The government is also pushing a “security by design” approach requiring cybersecurity protections to be incorporated into technology and digital platforms from the outset. Nezar said AI-enabled deepfakes, synthetic voices and social engineering are increasing the scale and sophistication of fraud, while the government is developing AI-based threat detection, anti-scam infrastructure and greater threat-intelligence sharing between industry and authorities.Statement follows (in Indonesian)...
