Democrats introduce US legislation to break up meatpacking monopolies

( July 17, 2026, 20:14 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Democratic US Representatives Chris Deluzio, Pramila Jayapal and Pat Ryan have introduced the Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act, which purports to break up meatpacking monopolies, rein in foreign corporate giants in the industry and end unfair pricing practices. The bill would make it unlawful for a major meatpacking conglomerate to control more than one major type of meat, impose hard caps on the concentration of beef markets at regional and national levels at punishment of divestiture enforced by the US Federal Trade Commission.  It directs the FTC to enforce against discriminatory pricing practices in retail and wholesale meat markets; and prohibits foreign leverage over the domestic meat market, among other provisions, according to a statement by Deluzio. Statement follows below: ...
