Australia should 'set the terms' early for data-center boom, minister says

He proposed a “triple lock” requiring data centers to fund new renewable energy, pay for grid infrastructure and provide flexible demand, while warning the country must retain sovereignty over its digital infrastructure and avoid mistakes made in the mining boom. Although investment could reach A$155 billion over the next decade, benefits may be reduced by heavy imports and rising energy demand, underscoring the need for early policy action, Charlton said.Australia must “set the terms” now for a surging data-center boom to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while managing pressure on the power grid, a government minister said....
