Chinese commerce chamber warns EU trade defenses could raise costs

( May 27, 2026, 05:03 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The China Chamber of Commerce to the EU said in a statement Tuesday that calls by five EU member states — France, Italy, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Spain — for broader use of trade-defense tools risk undermining the rules-based global trading system and increasing costs for European industries and consumers. The chamber said additional tariffs, safeguard investigations and “economic security” measures would not resolve structural trade imbalances between China and the EU. It said Chinese companies operating in Europe contribute to industrial capacity, employment and green-transition goals, particularly in electric mobility, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.Statement follows....
