Germany's €6bn Covid-19 bailout for Lufthansa illegal, EU top court says

( April 23, 2026, 07:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Lufthansa has lost its legal challenge to a lower court verdict that ruled a German €6 billion recapitalization plan for the air carrier was illegal. In a judgment delivered Thursday, the EU's Court of Justice said the lower court was right to find that the European Commission breached the temporary state aid framework.  But judges also ruled that the General Court was wrong to hold that the state aid regulator made several errors, including that Lufthansa couldn't finance itself from the market and that the air carrier didn't hold significant market power at certain airports. Press release follows.
