Legislation protecting Washingtonians from AI deepfakes enacted by governor

( March 18, 2026, 17:34 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary:  Washington legislation (SB 5886) aimed at strengthening protections against AI-generated impersonations and other digital misuse of a person’s identity has been enacted by Governor Bob Ferguson. The new law updates Washington’s personality rights law to address the growing use of deepfakes and clarifies that using a person’s forged digital likeness without their consent violates their personality rights. “As technology evolves, so do the risks of having someone’s image or voice used without their permission,” said sponsor Sen.
