Japanese retailer Lopia's antitrust probe concludes as JFTC approves remedy measures

( December 25, 2025, 07:53 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japanese supermarket chain Lopia has had its antitrust investigation closed after the Japanese watchdog approved its remedy package on Thursday. The Japan Fair Trade Commission said an investigation launched after a June raid found that Lopia used suppliers’ employees without pay between September 2022 and June 2025 during new store openings and post-renovation periods. The JFTC said that such practices could constitute an abuse of superior-bargaining power under the Antimonopoly Act, because many suppliers depended on Lopia's rapidly expanding business. To address these concerns, Lopia proposed a commitment plan that includes a payment of 443 million yen ($2.8 million) to 400 suppliers. The statements, in Japanese, are attached....
