South Korea eases blanket internet-isolation rule for large data holders

( October 31, 2025, 07:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator on Friday began implementing reforms to the blanket internet-isolation rule for controllers that store and manage personal data for an average of 1 million or more people. According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, companies may now run device-level risk analyses and exempt low-risk processing from isolation, while machines that set access rights or handle sensitive and encryption-eligible information must remain cut off from the internet. The update also tightens platform-side security for open-market sellers and other third parties, extending tiered access rights, strong authentication for authorized external access and broader access-log retention. In parallel, it bolsters controllers’ self-governance by letting them set inspection frequency, methods and follow-up, and expands internal management plans to include controls on exporting or copying personal data.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
