Khan hopes USFTC under Trump doesn't cut 'sweetheart deals' with Amazon, Meta

( January 8, 2025, 22:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan said she hopes that Amazon and Meta don't obtain sweetheart deals over pending litigation under the Trump administration. "Can they get some type of settlement that’s cheap, that settles for pennies on the dollar and lets them escape from a liability finding in court?" Khan said in an interview with CNBC's Squawkbox. "I hope it won’t. But again, I can’t predict that. And we are set to go to trial against Facebook this spring, against Amazon in the fall of 2026. Of course, they would want a sweetheart deal, and I hope future enforcers wouldn’t give them that," the outgoing FTC chair said. Khan also said there is risk of "backsliding" over merger enforcement even though courts vindicated the FTC going after serial acquisitions and private equity rollouts in health care markets. "...if there is a reversion, that’s going to be in contravention of the law, not because of it," Khan said....
