BMW China finance firm fined for unauthorized personal data, credit queries

( May 13, 2025, 08:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: BMW's automotive finance company in China, a joint venture between the BMW Group and Brilliance BMW Automotive Company, has been fined more than 900,000 yuan (approximately $125,000) by the Beijing branch of China’s central bank for accessing the government-run financial credit information database to obtain personal and business credit data without proper consent. The company’s former regional IT director for China, who was held directly responsible for the misconduct, was fined 100,000 yuan. The company offers retail and wholesale financial services, as well as leasing business support for BMW Group products. The penalty was issued in April and made public only recently.
