EU guidance to German carmakers on tech cooperation to be made public, Vestager says

By Nicholas Hirst ( July 8, 2021, 11:22 GMT | Insight) -- Industries collaborating on developing green technology and other forms of innovation will receive guidance from the European Commission with the publication of a comfort letter issued to Germany's car sector, EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager has said. The commission issued guidance to the Volkswagen Group, Daimler and BMW on how to respect the bloc's competition rules at the same time as fining them (see here) for breaching cartel rules when working on technology to clean car emissions. "When this letter becomes public, it will also work as guidance for companies that have not been in this cartel," Vestager said. She said that, as part of the guidance, the car companies were able to work on "real standardization" of, say, AdBlue filters that would be available across the industry or discuss quality standards for AdBlue, a cleaning chemical injected into the flow of diesel cars' exhaust gases. Vestager made the comments today when presenting the commission's decision to fine the carmakers 875 million euros ($1.03 billion) for colluding on the development of technology to reduce cars' NOx emissions.
