California Consumer Privacy Act needs major changes, privacy experts tell state lawmakers

( January 17, 2019, 18:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: California privacy experts are urging state lawmakers to make major changes to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), passed in 2018, which lets consumers opt out of having their data sold online. The CCPA affects many businesses that never had chance to explain the law’s problems to the legislature; imposes excessive costs on small businesses; requires businesses to waste money complying with multiple privacy laws; degrades consumer privacy; reaches beyond state borders; and has definitions that are too broad, they say. "Everyone has acknowledged that the CCPA remains a work-in-progress, but there may be some misapprehensions about the scope and scale of the required changes still remaining," wrote Eric Goldman, co-director of Santa Clara University's High Tech Law Institute....
