Cut EU tariff-free steel quotas by up to 50 percent, industry urges commission

Eurofer, the industry lobby, is asking the European Commission to adjust the measures in such a way to reduce import market shares to “a more sustainable level; around 16 percent for flat products and less than 10 percent for long products.”The EU steel safeguard needs to be significantly tightened to bring urgently needed relief to the bloc’s steel industry, says a proposal seen by MLex. In a 35-page document, Eurofer — the EU steel industry lobby — asks the European Commission to cut the duty-free quotas by up to 50 percent, to raise the out-of-quota duty rate, and to set up individual quotas for imports from China that are currently subject to trade-defense measures....
