ECB’s ‘Danish compromise’ decision for Banco BPM-Anima is pivotal for other deals

By Jean Comte ( January 22, 2025, 09:36 GMT | Comment) -- The European Central Bank's arm for banking supervision is currently assessing whether Banco BPM will be allowed to apply a specific prudential treatment to asset manager Anima, should it succeed in buying it. The decision will have direct consequences for similar deals, such as the one sought out by Axa and BNP Paribas, and could therefore prove decisive in the EU's quest to build financial champions.On Monday evening, Italian lender Banco BPM claimed another victory in its bid to acquire asset manager Anima, with the announcement that the Italian government had decided not to block the deal (see here). This is a significant step toward completion of the purchase, following clearance by the Italian competition authority in December 2024 (see here)....
