South Korea unveils final details of national AI computing-center plan

( January 22, 2025, 01:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea has unveiled the final details of its plan to establish a national AI computing center, which will serve both as infrastructure to support developers and as a buyer of locally developed AI chips. A special-purpose company will be established as a 51-49 joint venture between public and private entities by September, with a total investment of 2 trillion won ($1.4 billion). Partial operations are expected to begin in November, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT. The center will boast at least 1 exaFLOPS of computing power and will be equipped with graphics-processing units and locally produced chips, such as neural processing units and process-in-memory chips.
