Gasoline prices lowest in cities with greatest retail competition: Australian watchdog

( November 11, 2025, 01:40 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Gasoline prices in Australian cities that have more small-to-medium-sized independent fuel retailers competing with larger chains are lower, according to a report published on Tuesday by Australia’s antitrust regulator. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission report found that greater competition led to “better outcomes for consumers, including lower prices,” senior official Anna Brakey said in a statement accompanying the report’s release. Smaller, independent gasoline retailers accounted for around 26 per cent of national retail gasoline sales in 2023-24, increasing from 18 per cent in 2017-2018, the report found.The report and the press release are attached. ...
