Shell wins UK patent dispute with Ensygnia IP over QR code payment technology

( December 5, 2024, 14:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Shell has again prevailed in a UK patent dispute over QR code payment technology used at Shell filling stations, with the Court of Appeal upholding a lower court ruling that Ensygnia's patent, relating to the use of graphical images which encode information, is invalid. Appeal judges agreed that Ensygnia improperly extended the scope of its patent and that prior art identified as "Schmidt" renders the patent obvious. The ruling allows Shell to continue using a payment system that uses QR codes to aid customers to pay for fuel.Judgment attached....
