Google-Anthropic partnership doesn’t qualify for merger probe, UK regulator says

By Jon Menon ( November 19, 2024, 13:29 GMT | Insight) -- Google’s partnership with Anthropic has effectively been cleared by the UK antitrust regulator, which said today that there wasn’t evidence that the tech giant had “material influence” over the AI company and the threshold for a merger review wasn't met. Google said last year that it would invest up to $2 billion in Anthropic. The partnership included Google acquiring non-voting shares in the startup, debt financing and supply of computing capacity.Google’s partnership with Anthropic has effectively been cleared by the UK antitrust regulator, which said there wasn’t evidence that the tech giant had “material influence” over the artificial intelligence company, and the arrangement didn't meet the threshold for a merger review....
