Mobile platforms with more than 40 million users proposed as target for Japan's smartphone law

( October 25, 2024, 09:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japan Fair Trade Commission suggested to a panel experts today that large digital platforms providing operating systems and other smartphone software to monthly active users of 40 million or more should be subject to a new smartphone-competition law. The panel members endorsed the proposal and the JFTC will start a public consultation from next Monday to designate Big Tech companies to be regulated by the Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software by Dec. 19. Operators with more than 40 million Japanese users of operating systems, app stores, browsers and search engines will be required to notify the JFTC.
