Malaysia introduces social media, Internet messaging regulatory framework

( August 1, 2024, 08:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Major social-media and Internet-messaging platforms with at least 8 million users in Malaysia such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Telegram, TikTok, WeChat, WhatsApp, X and YouTube will be required to apply for a license in the country before Jan. 1, 2025, under a new regulatory framework gazetted today. In the interim, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will develop the conduct that must be adhered to by these service providers, including methods for recognizing online harm and content-moderation requirements.
