Australia's top financial-markets official steps down, following expenses controversy

( January 29, 2021, 04:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The top official of Australia’s financial regulator, James Shipton, is set to resign, in a move that signals a shake-up at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. In a statement issued today, Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said that Shipton, the chairman of ASIC, would step away from his role once a replacement had been found, following an inquiry into whether he should have claimed a large sum of expenses to manage the tax implications of his recent return to Australia from Hong Kong. Frydenberg said the inquiry made no adverse findings against Shipton, but that the official had agreed to step down as chairperson in coming months, after three years in the job.  The full statement from Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg follows: ...
