Gas-transport operators call for binding EU renewable gas target for 2030

( January 26, 2021, 12:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A group of leading EU gas-transport companies named Gas for Climate today called for a binding bloc-wide target of 11 percent renewable gas by 2030. The goal should be included in the EU’s renewable energy directive, the group claims, as the energy sector awaits an updated version of the rules in June. The businesses further suggested that the target should comprise two sub-targets: 8 percent for “sustainable” biomethane; 3 percent for renewable hydrogen. “A binding target for renewable gas will help to reduce production costs of biomethane and green hydrogen during the 2020s, while in the long term help to achieve the European decarbonization targets at the lowest societal costs,” Gas for Climate said in a statement. The group includes Enagás, Gasunie, Snam and Swedegas, among others.Statement follows. A policy paper is attached....
