EU governments must reject e-privacy regulation that allows data retention, privacy advocates say

( January 25, 2021, 14:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The current draft of the EU’s e-privacy regulation that gives telecom companies the ability to retain data should be rejected, a group of privacy advocates said in a letter to EU governments. The proposal allows for a broad exception for data retention under national security and public order grounds, which would “bypass” EU Court of Justice decisions on data retention, the group says in an open letter. The current text that allows for “cookie walls” — when websites seek consent to track users — isn’t considered “valid consent” under the General Data Protection Regulation, it added. The group includes Access Now, Bits of Freedom, European Digital Rights, IT-Pol Denmark, Noyb, Open Rights Group and Privacy International.Statement follows....
