UK online safety regulator issues interim watermarking ‘recommendations’ for tech, AI platforms

( July 23, 2024, 10:28 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: UK online safety regulator Ofcom has published a list of ways in which tech firms could reduce the risk of deepfakes ahead of the Online Safety Act's illegal harms provisions coming into effect next year. Despite the law not including watermarking or even regulating AI model developers and hosts, Ofcom suggests that tech companies and online platforms apply invisible watermarks to AI-generated content that can be detectable to algorithms and visible labels. It also recommends that platforms use automated and human-led content reviews and set clear rules in their terms of service about what synthetic content can be created and shared. Ofcom also recommends AI model developers use prompt filters to prevent harmful content from being created. Statement follows, research paper attached....
