Renewables, energy efficiency key to climate neutrality by 2050, G7 ministers say

( April 16, 2023, 21:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Greater renewable energy use and energy efficiency are key to reach climate neutrality by 2050, the Group of Seven’s climate, energy and environment ministers said in a communiqué after a two-day meeting in Japan. Energy efficiency is the “first fuel” in the global energy transition, they said. G7 countries will collectively increase offshore wind capacity by 150 gigawatts and solar photovoltaic by more than 1 terawatt by 2030 based on existing targets estimates, they wrote, adding that they will promote improvement in innovative technologies. The ministers also committed to accelerate the phaseout of “unabated fossil fuels” but did not indicate a deadline.Statement attached....
