Food retailers, drinks suppliers fined in Portugal for restricting price competition

( December 21, 2020, 20:05 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Six large food-retail chains and two beverage suppliers have been fined a total of around 304 million euros by Portugal's antitrust-enforcement agency for fixing the prices of their respective suppliers' products, the AdC said today. The retailers are Modelo Continente, Pingo Doce, Auchan, Intermarché, Lidl and Cooplecnorte, and the suppliers are Sociedade Central de Cervejas and Primedrinks. The businesses had aligned sales prices, restricting price competition between supermarkets and depriving consumers of price differentiation, the office said, calling the conduct “very serious [and] harmful to consumers.” An SCC board member and a director of Modelo Continente were also fined.Statement follows.
