EU needs ‘de-risking’ strategy to respond to China’s stance, Von der Leyen says

( March 30, 2023, 09:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said today that with China “becoming more repressive at home and more assertive abroad,” the EU should develop a “de-risking — not de-coupling” strategy toward Beijing in four areas, namely diplomacy, economy, trade, and international cooperation. She argued the EU needed to take “a critical look at our own resilience and dependencies, in particular within our industrial and defense base.” This should include, among other things, setting up a new vetting mechanism for the EU’s outbound investments into “emerging or sensitive technologies” to avoid the leakage, Von der Leyen said. The speech came ahead of next week's visit that she and French president Emmanuel Macron will make to China.Speech follows....
