Vermont consumer privacy bill vetoed by governor over private right of action, child safety provisions

( June 13, 2024, 21:20 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Vermont Governor Phil Scott has vetoed consumer privacy legislation passed by the state legislature, which included a limited private right of action and provisions designed to protect child safety online. The private right of action would make Vermont an outlier, Scott said, and similar child safety provisions have been blocked in California court. Instead, the state legislature should adopt Connecticut’s data privacy law, as New Hampshire did, Scott said.
