​Digital platforms must meet community standards, stop terrorist content, world leaders say

A statement issued over the weekend by the G20 leaders, meeting in Japan, said that the increased sophistication of criminals using platforms to promote "violent extremism conducive to terrorism," or VECT, “does not lessen the importance of platforms mitigating the proliferation of terrorist and VECT content.” The statement, signed in Osaka, goes on to urge platforms to “step up the ambition and pace of their efforts to prevent terrorist and VECT content from being streamed, uploaded, or re-uploaded.” The resolution was promoted by Australia and is a direct response to March terrorist attacks in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, in which an Australian has been charged with shooting dead 51 worshippers in two mosques, and has been accused of broadcasting the massacre on Facebook.The G20 statement follows: ...
