Platform regulation among South Korean Democratic Party's key legislative goals

( June 12, 2024, 06:58 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Platform legislation ranks among the top 10 legislative priorities for South Korea's Democratic Party, which holds an overwhelming majority in the 22nd National Assembly that began last month. Members of the party who sit on the parliament's National Policy Committee said today they aim to tackle challenges stemming from rapidly expanding online platforms by pushing for legislation that punishes abuse of power by dominant platform operators and rectifies the imbalance of power between platforms and small businesses. To that end, they intend to hold talks with interested parties to gather input on proposed laws and work towards passing legislation. Other priorities include a revision to the e-commerce law to protect consumer rights, with measures such as requiring foreign operators to designate domestic agents, establishing a consumer dispute mediation committee and strengthening the transaction responsibilities of platform operators.The statement, in Korean, follows:...
