​Banks holding ‘bail-in’ bonds should face stiffer capital test, EU risk watchdog says

( November 2, 2017, 16:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Banks should have higher capital requirements when they hold “bail-in” bonds from other banks to avoid spreading losses across the financial system in case of failure, the European Systemic Risk Board said in a working paper, noting that eurozone lenders hold almost half a trillion euros of such instruments. The ESRB, which doesn’t have rulemaking powers, also called for a curb on sales of such debt to ordinary savers, as they are unlikely to understand the risks and pose a political obstacle to imposing losses on creditors.The document is attached below....
