UK's 2000 surveillance rules partly breached European Convention on Human Rights, judges say

( May 25, 2021, 13:08 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Aspects of the UK's old surveillance regime — from 2000 — violated the right to privacy under the European Convention on Human Rights, judges at the European Court of Human Rights ruled today. The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, or RIPA, violated the convention's Article 8 on private life in relation to bulk interception and obtaining data from communication service providers, the court said. There was no independent authorization for bulk interception warrants, it said. Further, there were insufficient safeguards for accessing journalistic sources, judges added. However, the court found that the regime for requesting and obtaining foreign intelligence had been subject to adequate supervision.The press release and judgment are attached....
