India's top court agrees to review two provisions challenged against July AML judgment

( August 25, 2022, 23:02 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Supreme Court of India said on Thursday that two provisions under the country's anti-money laundering legislation — the reverse burden of proof and not providing an Enforcement Case Information Report to the accused — required "a reconsideration." Within a month of the July 27 Supreme Court judgment that upheld the 2019 amendments to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Congress Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram petitioned the court, challenging the judgment. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court said that while the objective of the PMLA is noble and money laundering is a serious offence, certain aspects of the recent judgment "will need a relook."
