The impact of the High Court’s decision not to rule on a jurisdictional matter will be immediate on Clearview AI, which has also been locked in a legal battle with Australia’s privacy watchdog. Yet proposals being discussed ahead of a legislative overhaul of the 1988 Privacy Act suggest policymakers are ready to accept the need for greater clarity about how and when foreign companies collecting Australian personal data can be targeted by enforcement action.Meta Platforms’ last-ditch attempt to coentain the fallout from a lawsuit linked to the tech giant’s Cambridge Analytica data breach went off the rails — spectacularly — in Australia’s top court this week....
