TikTok's data-handling practices not breaching Australian privacy laws, regulator finds

( May 28, 2024, 01:53 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Chinese video-sharing platform TikTok’s practices handling the personal information of Australians aren't contravening existing privacy laws, preliminary inquiries by Australia's privacy watchdog have found. In a statement to MLex today, Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind said there was no obvious breach of Australian privacy law by TikTok that would warrant opening an investigation. However, Kind also said that Pixels, a tracking tool used by TikTok that can be embedded on websites to collect people's information without their consent, is invasive and harmful and that the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner was considering its next steps to address broader issues raised by such tracking tools.The full statement by Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind follows:...
