NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank, Rakuten Mobile targets of JFTC's latest mobile-phone survey

( August 10, 2022, 01:47 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s four wireless carriers — NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile — are being targeted by the Japan Fair Trade Commission’s latest market survey on mobile-phone sales practices. Despite the JFTC’s previous advocacy efforts and the telecom regulator’s actions, the four main carriers may be selling mobile handsets at extremely low prices, some as low as 1 yen (less than a penny), the JFTC said in a statement. This could constitute as unfair trade practice through predatory pricing, and the JFTC is launching an emergency survey to determine the extent of the 1-yen device sales and their distribution, the regulator said.  Questionnaires will be sent out to the mobile-network operators and their sales agents, and hearings will be held with mobile virtual-network operators and with retailers of second-hand mobile devices, according to the statement.
